The completion of this new-build house in July 2016 was the culmination of a long-term project for the client. They had bought two adjacent garages on a cobbled street in the heart of Bethnal Green several years before, with the ultimate ambition of demolishing them and building a new house in their place to sell or rent out.

The house was designed in a contemporary, warehouse style, with exposed brickwork, an impressive 3-storey metal and timber open staircase and large glass elements to let natural light flood in.

Get Turner had worked with the same architect on previous projects and were delighted to be commissioned as building contractor on this exciting new-build. Logistically, this was an extremely difficult site to work on, as the street was too narrow for delivery lorries to access and everything from bricks to large windows and doors had to be carried by hand from the adjoining road. On site we were working in very tight spaces, especially in the basement, and had to plan every aspect of the build in meticulous detail.

After demolishing the garages, we dug down and constructed a concrete basement with piled foundations and a waterproofed membrane system. From this we created the lower ground floor and then worked our way up to the top floor. The house has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and a separate WC, a kitchen/dining room and a large living area with a roof terrace. The spec included specialist energy-efficient insulation for the walls, solid oak flooring throughout, over-height internal doors, specialist windows and roof lights and striking metal mesh cladding on the front of the house and the roof terrace.

The result is a stunning, unique new house that both fits into and stands out from its immediate surroundings in one of the most sought-after parts of East London.
